100 Years of Social Work: Debates and Global Perspectives on the Discipline’s Past, Present, and Future

On May 4, 1925 the first School of Social Service in Latin America was founded in Chile. As we approach the discipline’s 100-year commemoration, we invite you to submit articles and research reports that examine the multiple transformations it has undergone over this century.

The journal Propuestas Críticas en Trabajo Social - Critical Proposals in Social Work is a bilingual publication of the Department of Social Work of the University of Chile that aims to promote debate and the construction of proposals to address the impacts of neoliberal capitalism, inequality, and oppression that affect various sectors of society. The aim is to disseminate proposals, analyses, and debates on social issues from theoretical-conceptual, political, and historical perspectives framed within the plurality of critical approaches of the social sciences and from the discussions of Social Work in dialogue with other disciplines.

Therefore, we welcome papers from a variety of disciplines and methodological traditions,
including studies based on qualitative, quantitative, or mixed designs, with a participatory and/or collaborative emphasis, that are linked to territories, communities, collectives, social movements, and public policies. Theoretical discussion articles in essay format, and book reviews are also welcome.

This special issue is mainly interested in retrospective views and critical readings of the profession's past, its pioneers, and analyses of the different social work schools around the world. We also seek submissions that identify tensions and/or connections with other disciplines and their identity redefinitions over time.

Submissions in regard to the debates and discussions on the present and the tensions that the discipline and professional practice confront on an international scale are also welcome. This includes the discipline’s and profession’s contemporary emphases and challenges, including perspectives on training and professional practice in the current context, disputed approaches, research agendas, dialogues or not with politics, struggles for recognition, and the search for social justice.

This special issue also aims to publish papers with prospective views on the future of social work and its transformations, such as identifying emerging contexts and new professional fields and the challenges of social work education in contexts of change.
